Australian car buyers have been given a fresh reminder this month that a low advertised interest rate is only one part of the finance decision.
Canstar’s July 2026 car loan comparison update shows secured car loan offers starting from 5.67% for a $50,000 loan over five years, with MoneyPlace and Stratton Finance both appearing at that headline rate in the snapshot.
Their comparison rates, however, are not identical, which highlights why borrowers need to look beyond the first number they see.

For anyone shopping for a new ute, family SUV, work vehicle or used car, the key takeaway is simple: the cheapest-looking loan may not be the cheapest loan once fees, loan term, eligibility rules and repayment flexibility are included. A comparison rate is designed to fold in the interest rate plus many standard fees, but it still may not capture every cost that applies to a particular borrower or vehicle.

This is especially important following ASIC’s recent review of the car finance sector, which examined more than 350,000 loans across eight providers. The regulator found that loan costs could vary widely and that establishment fees from lenders, distributors, brokers or dealers could add materially to the amount borrowed. In some cases, borrowers who later had cars repossessed were still left owing substantial debts.

That does not mean buyers should avoid finance altogether. It does mean the approval process should start before the dealership conversation, not after. Getting a clear borrowing range, understanding the likely repayment and checking whether the vehicle is suitable security can help reduce pressure at the point of sale.

Before signing, borrowers should compare car loan options across more than one lender and ask for a full breakdown of the interest rate, comparison rate, establishment fees, monthly charges, early payout conditions and any balloon or guaranteed future value structure. A small difference in rate can be outweighed by a longer term, higher fees or a repayment structure that leaves a large final amount due.

It is also worth taking time to model repayments against your real household or business cash flow. If the repayment only works in a perfect month, the loan may be too tight. The best car loan is not simply the one with the lowest advertised rate; it is the one that fits the vehicle, the borrower and the budget without creating unnecessary risk.
