The Australian automotive market is witnessing a notable increase in the sales of used hybrid vehicles, indicating a growing consumer preference for sustainable yet practical transportation options.

According to the October 2025 Automotive Insights Report (AIR) released by the Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA) in collaboration with AutoGrab, used hybrid car sales have more than doubled over the past two years. In October 2023, 6,868 used hybrid vehicles were sold, a figure that surged to 14,784 by October 2025.

This upward trend suggests that Australian consumers are actively seeking vehicles that offer both environmental benefits and everyday practicality. Hybrids, which combine internal combustion engines with electric propulsion, provide improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions without the range limitations associated with fully electric vehicles.

James Voortman, CEO of AADA, noted that the increase in hybrid sales reflects a broader shift in consumer attitudes towards sustainability. He emphasized that hybrids serve as an accessible entry point for individuals looking to reduce their carbon footprint while maintaining the convenience of traditional fuel-powered vehicles.

In addition to the rise in sales, the report highlighted a 21.1% month-on-month increase in hybrid vehicle listings, indicating a growing supply to meet consumer demand. This expansion in the used hybrid market provides more options for buyers, potentially leading to more competitive pricing and increased adoption.

For Australians considering a vehicle purchase, the burgeoning used hybrid market offers an opportunity to invest in a car that aligns with both environmental values and practical needs. As the automotive industry continues to evolve, hybrids represent a viable and immediate step towards more sustainable transportation choices.
